Singles: times have changed, but the concept remains the same
In the beginning, a long time ago, people used to seek out partners from the opposite sex with a view to marrying them. Though people are still looking to find a partner from the opposite sex with a view to marrying them, many are simply looking to make friends, have a fling or even date without any commitments. Dating today is meant to be a means by which a person is able to assess whether a partner of the opposite sex will make a good partner for them.

Singles are also dating each other in their own countries and also in foreign lands and they can date informally or, as is the practice in the East, do so very formally – usually with a view to marrying a partner. In the western world, singles may want to only date with a view to go out and spend time together and often there is no serious intent behind their dating.
Singles that date in the more advanced countries of the world do so a lot more casually and it can often be just an excuse to socialize followed by finding out whether their partners are compatible. In fact, the very concept of modern singles dating has undergone a big change and now it even includes having a romantic liaison with a member of the opposite sex.
With changes in the social makeup of modern societies, singles are dating in different ways as compared to earlier generations. For example, in the forties, they would date through responding to advertisements placed in broadsheets and magazines. Once technology changed and the telephone and Internet came along, singles dating saw a sea-change that took advantage of these changes in technology.
However, despite changes in technology, singles dating as a concept has not seen that much change though now it has become normal to place advertisements online and not in a magazine or other publication. Letters have given way to emails and telephone conversations have made way for chatting and now there are even complete networks of singles where people of all shades and hues post their profiles – sometimes for free – other times for a small fee.
You may be surprised to know that as many as twenty million people register at free dating services on a daily basis. Another form of dating that is finding favor with singles today is speed dating in which many people get together to meet in a single place to find someone with whom to click with.
